INCOMING 5TH QUARTER MEMBERS

2009 was the final season for the following Dinos Football players. The 5th Quarter is happy to welcome them all to the ranks of Dinos Football alumni.


MATT GROHN - #22

Position: Defensive Back

Height: 6-1

Weight: 207

Year: 5th

Faculty: Communication & Culture

Birthdate: 8/1/1986

Hometown: Lethbridge, Alta.

Last Team: LCI

Before UC: Southern Alberta all-star at receiver; LCI’s MVP in basketball

Personal: Full name Matthew Davis Grohn…Graduate of Lethbridge Collegiate Institute…Hopes to pursue a career in economics


Career Highlights

·finished second on team with 40 tackles, including 35 solo

·named Canada West defensive player of the week during both weeks of the conference playoffs

·had eight tackles and two sacks against Regina in conference semifinal

·made a game-saving tackle on the one yard line late, setting up a goal-line stand for the Dinos to win the game

·named CIS defensive player of the week after a seven tackle, two fumble recovery performance that led directly to 17 Dinos points in a 44-21 win over Simon Fraser

·played in the 2007 and 2008 East-West Bowls



DEKE JUNIOR - #7

Position: Quarterback

Height: 6-0

Before UC: Played five years with the Regina Thunder of the Prairie Football Conference…led PFC in passing in 2007 (2,488 yards)

Personal: Parents Rick and Sandra…full name Deke Robert Junior…graduate of Regina’s Thom Collegiate High School…younger brother Travis plays for the Regina Thunder…would like to become a firefighter after graduating…enjoys working out and playing video games…MVP and offensive player of the year in high school (2002, 2003)…also played hockey and baseball, travelling to the baseball nationals four times…is a competitive boxer…


Career Highlights

·took over as starting quarterback in Week 2 of the season

·led the Dinos to a 5-1 record in the regular season as a starting QB

·threw for 1584 yards and seven TDs in the regular season

·added 200 yards rushing

·named Canada West offensive player of the week in Week 2 after a 37-17 win over Manitoba

·named Canada West offensive player of the week after a 22-for-28, 325-yard, four-TD performance against Simon Fraser in the conference final, a 44-21 Calgary win



CHASE MOORE - #42

Position: Linebacker

Height: 6-2

Before UC: Played four seasons with the Calgary Colts…Colts MVP in his final year…Central Memorial’s MVP and athlete of the year in grade 12…

Personal: Parents Kirk and Tari…full name Chase Patrick Moore…graduate of Calgary’s Central Memorial High School…attended Mount Royal College, making the Dean’s List, while playing for the Calgary Colts…brother Chad played with Saint Mary’s University…hopes to work in the energy sector after completing his football career…graduated from the Haskayne School of Business with a Bachelor of Commerce in 2009…

·defensive co-captain in 2008

·team-high 50 tackles in 2007

·2007 Dinos nominee for President’s Award (top defensive player) for the second consecutive year

ANDREW OBRECHT - #96

Position: Defensive Line

Height: 6-3

Birthdate: 6/13/1986

Hometown: Calgary, Alta.

Last Team: Western Canada HS

Before UC: 2004 member of the Alberta U-19 team…played for former Dinos All-Canadian Paul Kerber at Western Canada

Personal: Parents Herbert and Shirley…graduate of Western Canada High School in Calgary…received Alexander Rutherford Scholarship to attend UC…black belt in martial arts, after studying for 12 years…born with asthma but has been diagnosed free of it


Career Highlights

·called to Montreal Alouettes training camp in 2009 as a long snapper/defensive lineman and made it to final cuts

·finished tied for third on the team in 2008 with 35.5 tackles

·forced two fumbles and broke up two passes in 2008

·18 tackles, two TFLs, and one sack in 2007

·recorded 32 tackles, four TFLs, and three sacks in 2006
